Well, hello there. Thank you for stopping by. I suppose you would like to know a little bit more about me. Working with a Realtor is a very personal decision, so let me take this opportunity to share my background and life with you.
I’ve been working in real estate since 2007, and got my start in the Rockridge neighborhood of Berkeley/Oakland, CA. It is a family affliction, being recruited into the business by my Mother-in-Law, a 20-year veteran Realtor. Since that time, I have worked on nearly 100 transactions. In California, I worked with buyer and sellers on beautiful Craftsman homes, small apartment buildings, starter homes, and magazine-quality designer showpieces. I was also proud to work with Hello Housing, a nonprofit housing group that uses federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds to buy foreclosed homes and rehabilitate them for low-to-moderate income homebuyers.
I am now licensed and working in both Oregon and Washington, specializing in working with people who may have needs bridging both sides of the Columbia River. There are many positive factors to living in either area….it all depends on what your needs and priorities are. I particularly enjoy working with people who are making the decision between living in the greater Portland area and the Vancouver/Camas region.
I also have a particular focus on working with seniors on their real estate needs. I have always enjoyed working with retirees, and recently earned the SRES—Seniors Real Estate Specialist—designation from the National Association of Realtors. My work in this area finds great support from Allen, my partner of 17+ years, a librarian who specializes in national and community resources for seniors.
I “hang my license” with local, independently-owned real estate brokerages with strong ties to the community. In Vancouver, I work with Capstone Real Estate, a thriving new firm with over 20 brokers. Our office also serves as a neighborhood art gallery featuring local artists. Stop by and see what is on the wall this month. In Portland, I work with Bridgetown Realty, a neighborhood institution for over 25 years, headed up by Deborah Betron and Mark Hardy.
Why Portland/Vancouver? I have felt a calling here since I was a toddler. My earliest memories are of visiting an aunt who lived in East Portland and gathering blackberries on the side of the road so she could make a cobbler (my second memory is eating the cobbler, in which she accidentally used salt instead of sugar). In the 1990s, my brother and his family relocated to Camas, and I began spending more and more time here. Allen and I realized quickly that PDX would someday be our home. Having relocated to the Portland/Vancouver area myself, I especially like working with clients in the process of moving here from elsewhere in the country.
Prior to my work as a Realtor, I was one of the first recruits to participate in the nascent Teach For America program in the early 90s. Following my commitment to TFA, I worked for over ten years as a film publicist, specializing in LGBT indie cinema. (And, no, I’m not a stunt man. Really.)
In our spare time, Allen and I love to take lengthy walks in any and all directions from our home in Irvington. When I’m not at the library or the farmer’s market or my gay bowling league, I serve on the board of directors and planning committee for Saturday in the Park, the annual LGBT pride event in Vancouver. I’m also currently on the tourism and membership committees for PABA, the LGBT chamber of commerce for the PDX metro area. And, nothing makes me happier at the end of the day than herding the three cats (Isobel, Zorro and Rat) that welcome me home.
